Grenada

Grenada is a small country in the West Indies Island group. With soil and topography not well suited to sugar growing, Grenada never had the population density, slaves and trade that distinguished the more commercial West Indies colonies of Barbados and Jamaica. Grenada is a small island, a bit larger than Malta with a small population, about the same as Tonga. Philatelically, Grenada is distinguished by its difficulty and philatelic appeal. Postal rate changes made for an extensive number of classic surcharged issues which have produced scores of varieties many of which are not expensive but are very difficult to find. And the later issues to 1940 are also not often seen. There are a few world wide countries that you rarely see good collections of (Liberia is one, Montenegro is another) and Grenada is perhaps the most prominent British Colony is this category. It seems that if the number of mid priced difficult to find varieties is too great, collectors lose interest. After all, what is the use of starting to get the stamps on the first few pages of a country in your specialty album, if you never can get the page to look as if you have accomplished something. The softness of demand produces little dealer interest so the stamps are seldom offered and the collector difficulty loop is completed and continued. The modern stamps of Grenada after 1960 are just thousands of dollars face of junky new issues. But if you are looking for a tough specialty with lots of hard to find not too expensive stamps, you should consider the treasure hunt that is classic Grenada.
