Apfelbaum’s Corner

The Timeless Writings of Earl Apfelbaum

The Apfelbaum’s Corner articles started in 1963 as a result of…

Earl Apfelbaum observing how similar writings used by a Philadelphia automobile dealer had had a positive public relations effect. After talking the matter over with our advertising agency at the time, we decided to insert an essay in Linn’s Weekly Stamp News and Stamp Collector each week. They received the column heading “Apfelbaum’s Corner”.

During Earl’s many decades in the stamp business, he estimated there were between 50 and 100 thousand stamp collectors he met and invariably liked well enough that, had there been the time, he would have kept in contact. Apfelbaum’s Corner was the nearest thing to letters that he had been able to devise. Earl felt that through the column he was able to reach thousands of collectors, many he may have even met. Earl depicted, with great clarity and humor, the life and times of collectors, their collections and the world around them. Thousands eagerly awaited the weekly perspective brought to them by philately’s leading authority.

Earl’s fear at first was that he would run out of ideas after a few months but so wide is the scope of the stamp collecting hobby that the writing of the columns was still going strong after 20 years.

Today, you can enjoy the timelessness of these writings as we bring the most popular ones back for your reading pleasure. There is no rhyme or reason to the order in which we have presented the columns. We hope you enjoy them as much as the tens of thousands of philatelists world wide have.
