Saxony Stamps

What Can Be Done: Saxony is one of the four or five major German States and one of the most collected. There are many varieties of stamps. The first stamp, referred to usually quite simply as Saxony # 1 is a rarity and catalogs over $5000. There are many forgeries of this stamp, and even many replicas and reproduction, which wouldn’t fool a serious collector, but are treacherous for collectors, who have never seen a genuine example. Do only buy this stamp from a reputable source. After the Saxony # 1, the rest of the stamps of Saxony are very affordable, well printed and provide great fun collecting.

Stamp Catalogs: Collectors of Saxony who live outside the United States usually use the German catalog Michel, which is a wonderful catalog for all of the German Area. Americans and Canadians usually use Scott and the Scott Classic catalog for most of the German States, Saxony included. The Scott general catalog is not very strong for Saxony or most of the other States for that matter. The Scott Classic is much better than the general Scott with expanded listings of specialists material included. The Classic catalog is worth the investment, if you are going to collect German States.

Stamp Albums: Most Americans use the pages from the Scott specialized album for Germany and Area but an increasing number of collectors are making their own pages. Remember there aren’t that many stamps for Saxony (and most of the other German States) and making your own album allows you the option of including specialist material such as multiples and cover in an attractive way.

Availability of Material: Saxony is one of the more popular of the German States. With the exception of the very rare and expensive first issue, the stamps are plentiful and completing the country is relatively easy. Many collectors specialize in the stamps of Saxony because specialty material is plentiful, attractive, and often offered.

Expense: The # 1 is a couple thousand dollars to buy in perfect condition ( hundreds with a small defect), but the rest of the country can be purchased for only a few hundred dollars.

Overall Grade: B+
